OVERVIEW
What Are Crab Spider?
Ever been out doing some gardening and noticed a spider sitting motionless on a flower or leaf? That's likely a crab spider, an ambush predator named for its crab-like appearance and ability to walk sideways and backward. Instead of spinning webs to catch prey, they use camouflage—sometimes changing color from white to yellow—to sit motionless on flowers or leaves, waiting to snatch passing insects like bees and flies.

Understanding Crab Spiders
Crab spiders are commonly found across the entire continental United States and tend to flourish in gardens, meadows, forest edges, and farmers’ fields. They are relatively small for spiders but can appear larger due to their long, stretched-out front legs. Females are typically about 6-10mm while males are smaller, about 3-5mm.
Their diet consists mostly of bees, flies, butterflies, and moths, while some ground-dwelling crab spiders feed on other small spiders or crawling insects.
Crab spiders flourish anywhere that pollinating insects are found, which typically means:
- Gardens and meadows, most commonly on the heads of flowers (goldenrod, daisies, sunflowers) and among tall grasses and even fence posts.
- Woodlands, where some species like the bark crab spiders live on tree trunks in leaf litter since they blend in so well with the browns and grays.
- Crops–however, they tend to be beneficial in agricultural fields since they hunt pests that can damage the harvest.
Crab spiders are harmless to humans and rarely bite unless pressed against the skin. If they do bite, their venom typically only causes mild pain and redness..
Let’s talk a little more about crab spiders, visual signs of infestations, prevention methods, and professional crab spider control services.

Signs
Signs of a Crab Spider Infestation
Since crab spiders don't build webs or breed effectively indoors, infestations are rare. The main sign that you have a crab spider visitor is spotting individual spiders near windows, on houseplants, or on cut flowers that you brought inside. Outdoors, look for them sitting motionless on flower heads—but don’t bother looking for webs, since they don’t spin them.

Prevention
Prevention Tips for Homeowners
Want to eliminate crab spiders from your home and property? Your best bet is to call us for a free estimate, but here are some measures you can take in the meantime:

Inspect plants
Shake out cut flowers and potted plants before bringing them inside.

Seal gaps
Caulk cracks around windows and install door sweeps.

Vegetation management
Trim shrubs and tree branches so they don't touch your home's exterior, removing the "bridge" spiders use to enter.

Why Choose Professional Pest Control?
Although crab spiders are generally harmless to humans, seeing them indoors often points to issues with the sealing around your home or a high population of insects, which is their food source. Our professionals identify these underlying vulnerabilities, providing a comprehensive solution that keeps almost all pests out, rather than just killing a few harmless spiders.

I've been with Hawx for a few years. They have great customer service. I didn't like that the price went up and got charged without my being notified but I discussed that with them once I realized my auto charge was increased. The current technician I've been getting is Jose. He's pretty responsive and serviced specific areas I needed/requested
