OVERVIEW

What are Deer Ticks?

Deer ticks, also called Black-legged Ticks, are small arachnids common in the eastern, north central, and mid-Atlantic US. Adult deer ticks are reddish-brown with black legs, while nymphs are poppy-seed-sized. They tend to thrive most commonly in moist, shaded environments like forests, tall grasses, leaf litter, and the "ecotone" (edge areas) where woods meet lawns, meadows, or fields.

These ticks require blood meals to survive and primarily feed on mice and deer, although they often latch onto humans in wooded areas. However, they do not jump or fly–rather, they position themselves on the tips of grass or shrubs with their front legs outstretched, ready to latch onto an unsuspecting host. They will then crawl to a warm, protected area such as a groin, armpit, or scalp before biting. Once they bite, they can “glue” themselves in place for days while they feed.

Risks

Understanding Deer Ticks and Their Risks

Deer ticks carry the highest risk for Lyme disease, as well as the bacterial infection known as anaplasmosis, anemia, and extreme fatigue from babesiosis, and the Powassan virus, which can cause encephalitis. Their tiny size makes them hard to detect, often allowing them to feed and transmit pathogens for days. Prompt removal is crucial, as disease transmission usually takes 24-48 hours.

Let's talk a little more about deer ticks, the benefits of professional deer tick control , deer tick yard treatment options, and prevention tips for a tick-free yard.

Benefits of tick Control

Benefits of Professional Deer Tick Control

Hawx professionals provide targeted applications using industrial-grade acaricides that go beyond DIY methods. They leverage their expertise in tick biology, treating key breeding grounds like stone walls and perimeters rather than just lawns. This effectively disrupts the lifecycle, reducing populations significantly more than DIY spot-treatments. In fact, professional barrier sprays can reduce tick populations by 90% or more, and are highly recommended if you live in a high-risk area for Lyme disease or have children and pets. Contact Hawx today for a free inspection to get a prevention and treatment plan customized for your home and yard that minimizes the serious health risks of ticks.

Treatment Options

Deer Tick Yard Treatment Options and Techniques

Deer tick yard treatments generally include barrier sprays (using permethrin, bifenthrin, or cyfluthrin) applied to yard perimeters to kill ticks almost immediately upon contact. You can also use granular treatments for ground cover, and tick tubes (cotton treated with permethrin for mice to nest with). Organic sprays using cedarwood or peppermint oil are also available but require more frequent application.

The best deer tick yard treatmentbest techniques focus on "edge habitats" rather than open lawns, since ticks rarely survive in short, sunny grass. Treatment is applied to the transition zone between lawn and woods, plus garden beds, stone walls, and under decks. High-pressure sprayers are good for disturbing leaves and coating the underside of vegetation where ticks hide. Target your treatment for spring (May) to kill dangerous poppy-seed-sized nymphs and again in early fall (October) to target adult ticks. Depending on your region, monthly applications from April to October are ideal.

I've been with Hawx for a few years. They have great customer service. I didn't like that the price went up and got charged without my being notified but I discussed that with them once I realized my auto charge was increased. The current technician I've been getting is Jose. He's pretty responsive and serviced specific areas I needed/requested
