OVERVIEW

What Are Lone Star Ticks?

Unlike other ticks that passively wait for hosts, Lone Star Ticks are aggressive hunters that actively pursue their next meal. Plus, the stakes are higher as lone star ticks are capable of spreading pathogens through their bites.

Identification

What do Lone Star Ticks look like?

The Lone Star Tick is a hard-bodied tick species found primarily in the Southeastern and Eastern United States, named for a distinctive single white dot found on the back of adult females. They are reddish-brown in color with 8 legs and range from about the size of a poppy seed (1-2mm) up to the size of a raisin (10mm) when engorged.

Behavior

Lone Star Tick Behavior

Lone Star Ticks tend to flourish in areas with high humidity that are shielded from direct sunlight. They can most commonly be found in:

  • Dense woodlands, especially forests with thick underbrush and shrub layers.
  • Ecotones, which are the "edge" habitats where woods meet lawns, meadows, or fields.
  • Shaded Grasses, including tall grass in shady areas or along trails (they tend to avoid open, sunny fields).
  • Low Vegetation, where they position themselves at the tips of low-lying branches, twigs, and shrubs (knee-high or lower) to grab onto passing hosts.

Lone Star Ticks feed on a wide variety of hosts, including white-tailed deer, dogs, and humans. All three life stages—larva, nymph, and adult—will bite humans. In fact, larvae gather together by the hundreds in microscopic clusters and stretch out their legs to latch onto passing hosts that brush up against them. Since they're so small, they usually go unnoticed until they've caused intense itching. Let's talk a little more about lone star ticks, tell-tale signs of lone star ticks, health risks, prevention methods, and how to get rid of a lone star tick infestation.

Risks

The Health Risks of Lone Star Ticks

Lone Star Ticks are a health concern because they may carry pathogens like Ehrlichiosis, Tularemia, and STARI (Southern Tick-Associated Rash Illness). In fact, their bite can trigger Alpha-gal syndrome, a condition where the person develops a severe, delayed allergy to red meat (beef, pork, lamb) and sometimes dairy. Because they are aggressive biters, they are often the most common tick found attached to humans in their geographic range.

How to avoid ticks outdoors

Signs of Infestation

Signs of a Lone Star Tick Infestation

Your chances of an infestation are higher if you have dense underbrush, tall grass, or areas frequented by deer (their primary reproductive host) near your home. Watch for these signs of a Lone Star Tick infestation:

Spotting Ticks

Spotting reddish-brown ticks on pets, clothing, or skin after being outdoors. Look for the white dot that appears on females.

Seed Ticks

"Seed Ticks": Encountering swarms of tiny larval ticks (the size of poppy seeds) that look like dirt but move around, often attaching themselves by the hundreds on shoes or ankles.

Bites

Bites: Multiple painful, itchy bites on yourself or pets.

Our Professional Tick Control Methods

If you're seeing signs of lone star ticks—like seeing reddish-brown ticks or ticks with a white dot on pets, clothing, or skin—DIY repellents or sprays may not be enough. Ticks can thrive in your backyard and around your home, so if you have pets or spend plenty of time outdoors, contact Hawx today for a free inspection to minimize the serious health risks of ticks.

Our trained technicians find probable tick hiding spots, address current tick problems, and create a prevention plan tailored to your home, family, and pets. We start with a comprehensive inspection, then apply outdoor treatments around your home's perimeter that address ticks at every stage of their life cycle. This approach not only works to eliminate ticks you already have, but also helps keep new ones from settling in.

Preventing Future Tick Infestations

To prevent future tick infestations, modify their habitat: clear tall grass, brush, and leaf litter where they hide. Create a barrier of wood chips or gravel between wooded areas and your lawn.

I've been with Hawx for a few years. They have great customer service. I didn't like that the price went up and got charged without my being notified but I discussed that with them once I realized my auto charge was increased. The current technician I've been getting is Jose. He's pretty responsive and serviced specific areas I needed/requested
