Types of Termites in Louisiana
Termites are found throughout Louisiana, and several species can cause serious damage to homes:
Native Subterranean Termites
Native subterranean termites live in the soil and reach wood through mud tubes. These tubes may appear on foundation walls, crawl space surfaces, and piers. The damage usually starts inside the wood, so the surface may look fine at first. Over time, the affected wood may sound hollow, soften, or begin to break apart.
Formosan Subterranean Termites
Formosan subterranean termites are among the most destructive termites on Louisiana properties, with a big presence in the New Orleans area and southeastern parishes. Their colonies can grow very large, and they can damage wood faster than many native subterranean termites. They can also build above-ground carton nests when enough moisture is available, hidden in wall voids and attics rather than remaining only in the soil.
Drywood Termites
Louisiana also has drywood termites, which live inside the wood they infest and do not need contact with soil to survive. Some drywood species can even infest old furniture, trim, or structural wood. The clearest sign is often frass, which looks like tiny hard pellets beneath the damaged wood.

Why Formosan Termites Are Such a Big Problem in South Louisiana
Termites in South Louisiana are a bigger problem than anywhere else in the state, and Formosan termites are the reason. Established heavily in the New Orleans area and the southeastern parishes, they don't always behave like standard subterranean termites—they can nest above ground when moisture is present, which may enable them to keep damaging a structure even without a connection to the soil, making them harder to spot.
They can also attack living trees, especially mature pecan trees. Mud tubes on trunks or near root flares are a common warning sign.
SWARM SEASON
When Is Termite Season in Louisiana?
Termite season in Louisiana effectively runs most of the year, but swarming is when termites become visible. The timing depends on the species.
Native Subterranean
Usually swarm during the day in February and March.
Formosan
Swarm later, from April through July, with the heaviest activity typically in early to mid-May. Swarms usually happen at dusk or at night on warm, humid evenings with little wind, and are attracted to lights.
Drywood
Have a different schedule. Some species swarm in late spring or summer, and dark southern drywood termites may swarm much later in the year.
