ARE TERMITES COMMON IN NORTH CAROLINA?

Termites Thrive in North Carolina's Warm, Damp Climate

Yes. Termites are common in North Carolina, and three main types account for nearly all activity in the state. Eastern subterranean termites are found in all 100 North Carolina counties and cause most of the termite damage found across the state.

Formosan subterranean termites have also been found in the southern Piedmont and along the coastal plain. They are invasive, form much larger colonies than Eastern subterranean termites, and can damage wood more quickly once they settle in near a structure. Drywood termites are rare in North Carolina, but when they do appear, the source is usually an infested piece of furniture or another wooden item brought into the home.

SWARM SEASON

When Is Termite Swarm Season in North Carolina?

Termites swarm to reproduce, with winged males and females leaving their colony to mate, establish new colonies, and expand the population. In North Carolina, termite swarms usually begin in late February or March and continue through May, with March and April the busiest months.

Eastern subterranean termites tend to swarm after rain, once daytime temperatures reach about 70°F. You'll see these swarms in the morning or early afternoon, and they may be over within an hour—many homeowners never see the swarm itself and only notice the wings left behind near a window or door after it's passed.

CRAWL SPACE RISK

Why North Carolina Crawl Spaces Can Attract Termites

Many North Carolina homes have crawl space foundations, which have the ideal damp conditions that subterranean termites prefer, like poor ventilation, plumbing leaks, standing water, damaged vapor barriers, and wood-to-soil contact. If you see mud tubes along foundation walls, support piers, joists, or other crawl space surfaces, you may have a termite problem.

In some cases, termites can create an above-ground colony near constantly damp subflooring without returning to the soil as often.

WARNING SIGNS

Signs of North Carolina Termites in Your Home

Termites usually stay hidden, but they always leave evidence behind. Watch out for:

  • Mud tubes on foundations, crawl space piers, or walls
  • Discarded wings near windows and doors
  • Wood that sounds hollow when tapped
  • Soft, blistered, or damaged flooring
  • Bubbling paint or drywall that looks like water damage
  • A gritty gray-brown coating on damaged wood
  • Small piles of drywood termite pellets near furniture or trim

NEXT STEPS

What to Do if You Find Termites in North Carolina

Avoid breaking open mud tubes or spraying the area with an over-the-counter insecticide, as disturbing the signs can make it harder to determine where termites are actually coming from:

Termite prevention
1

Don't Disturb Active Areas

Avoid breaking open mud tubes or spraying the area with an over-the-counter insecticide.

2

Document What You Find

Take photos of wings, mud tubes, damaged wood, or termites themselves before calling for an inspection.

3

Schedule a Professional Inspection

An inspector can identify the termite species, look for other active areas, and evaluate parts of the home most likely to be affected.

4

Match Treatment to the Infestation

Termite treatment can range from baiting systems and localized liquid treatments to a complete perimeter treatment, based on the species, location, and extent of the infestation.

I've been with Hawx for a few years. They have great customer service. I didn't like that the price went up and got charged without my being notified but I discussed that with them once I realized my auto charge was increased. The current technician I've been getting is Jose. He's pretty responsive and serviced specific areas I needed/requested
